New visa system to use AI to detect fraudulent applicants

As the Australian immigration rules get tougher, so is its Department of Home Affairs. In a new development concerning what is being referred to as a once-in-a-generation overhaul of Australia’s visa system, the Department may look into using artificial intelligence to detect any problems with visa applications, mainly fraud and fake information.

Expected to be launched by December 2019, this product will mainly include making decisions around “the genuineness of the applicant’s intention to depart Australia at the end of their visa, or the genuineness of a claimed spouse relationship”.

This is the Department’s one further step towards automating the system.
