What are caveats and who is affected?

Recently, we noticed a few readers sending their queries regarding caveats and how they may affect their applications. This blog aims to serve as a cumulative response to their queries.

Let’s begin with what caveats are and who they affect.

Caveats are special conditions that apply to certain occupations in the occupation lists. Post April 2017 changes, they affect Temporary Skilled (Work) visa (subclass 457) applications lodged on or after 1 July, as well as applications that were lodged before, but were not finalised by 1 July are also affected by the changes; and Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa (subclass 186) applications lodged on or after 1 July. Applications lodged before 1 July will not be affected.

There are three ways caveats can be applied to an occupation. This depends on the applicant’s: 1) work experience, 2) regional location, and 3) nature of the occupation.

1 - Occupations with work experience caveats (generally at least two years of work experience):
